A History Of Violence by Original Soundtrack

Composer: Howard Shore. Recording information: Air Lyndhurst, London, England. David Cronenberg's mirror to our obsession with cinematic gore is given an appropriate soundtrack here by fellow Canadian, Oscar winner, and longtime Cronenberg collaborator Howard Shore. Shore excels at the soundtrack composer's art of musically capturing mood and character--the brooding setting of the seemingly innocent "Diner" and the ambivalence he brings to his "Hero" theme are textbook examples of the genre--while the dramatic tension he builds up through the use of simple themes performed on "pure" instruments like the ubiquitous flute is palpable.
